    Blue Thumb Water Quality Education Program accepts community volunteers to monitor local streams in their area for water pollution. Volunteer projects include monthly chemical monitoring of streams, semi annual insect & fish population monitoring, educating the public about water pollution prevention, annual creek clean ups, and marking storm drains with the message "No Dumping, Keep our Streams clean."

    To encourage stewardship of the nation's water resources, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is leading an "Adopt Your Watershed" campaign. Through this effort, EPA challenges citizens and organizations to join them and others who are working to protect and restore our valuable rivers, streams, wetlands, lakes, ground water, and estuaries. By visiting the on-line database, you can learn about opportunities to get involved in activities in your community, such as monitoring, cleanups, and restoration projects. As of April 2002, the database contains 3500 groups that you might want to join.

Now, American consumers can get more information than ever before about the quality of our drinking water. Consumer Confidence Reports, sometimes called Water Quality Reports, must be prepared each year by water systems to explain what substances have been found in drinking water and whether the water is safe to drink. This website provides consumers and professionals with supplementary information on Consumer Confidence Reports. The primary purpose is to inform and educate civic leaders, health professionals, environmental and consumer groups, journalists, and others to better understand the reports, and to be able to answer questions about a Consumer Confidence Report.

    Earth Force is youth-driven with a national Youth Advisory Board (YAB) made up of 15 members, ages 12-17. Through Earth Force, youth discover and implement lasting solutions to environmental issues in their community. In the process they develop life-long habits of active citizenship and environmental stewardship. Educators turn to Earth Force for innovative tools to engage young people in community problem solving. Protecting Our Watersheds, a water monitoring education and action tool, is a comprehensive educational package that includes materials to engage students in taking action around problems they find in their watershed. The package includes a facilitator's guide, posters, activity notebook, handouts and a tote bag. Protecting Our Watersheds works well with the interactive GREEN (Global Rivers Environmental Education Network) website.
