          www.hti.umich.edu/n/nal/
The Organic Roots Project is an ongoing effort of the Alternative Farming Systems Information Center (AFSIC) at the National Agricultural Library. There are two critical parts to this project:
  • Searching for historic but extremely pertinent information on organic farming.
  • Making this information available to growers and researchers on-line in full text.

A recent addition to the Organic Roots Project is the Organic Agriculture Information Access database -- http://www.hti.umich.edu/n/nal/. This is an electronic collection of historic United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) publications related to organic agriculture. There are now 186 full text and searchable documents in the database which were published before 1942 (before synthetic chemicals became widely used). Each publication contains state-of-the-art information and data on organic farming that is as relevant for today's agriculture as it was when first published.

    Future of Food Film
    Guidebook, Multi-media, Materials
          www.thefutureoffood.com
There's a revolution going on in the farm fields and on the dinner tables of America -- a revolution that's being fought behind closed doors of corporate boardrooms and government agencies over the use of genetically modified organisms in our food. THE FUTURE OF FOOD offers an in-depth investigation into the disturbing truth behind the unlabeled GMO products that have quietly filled grocery store shelves over the past decade. From the test tube, to the farm field, to the supermarket, the film follows the personal stories of the farmers in the U.S., Canada who have been sued by large multi-national corporations for continuing the time-honored tradition of saving seeds; of the scientists in the U.S. and Europe who have been censored for raising serious public and environmental health concerns; and finally, of the consumers, who are beginning to question why this has escaped the attention of both the media and the Federal agencies in charge of keeping our food safe. THE FUTURE OF FOOD unravels the complex web of market and political forces that are changing the nature of what we eat. Food has gone from being a basic need to part of a larger billion dollar battle to control the world's food production.

Located in South Western Pennsylvania, we are a small, family run seed house that has been in the mail order business since 1988. When we started this business, our first priority was to offer old fashioned vegetables noted for their taste. All of the varieties we offer are open pollinated (non hybrid) and have been grown by generations of backyard gardeners. The flower varieties that we offer have that simple, old fashioned beauty of days gone by. We added herb seeds to our catalog after many requests from our customers to do so. We have a network of gardeners throughout the United States that are constantly testing the varieties we offer for sale, to ensure they do well in a backyard garden setting. Many of the seeds we offer have come from backyard gardeners, whose families have saved the seeds for generations, throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and overseas.

I would like to alert the Oklahoma sustainability community to this new resources. The author is Bill Smith, who is an Oklahoma County Master Gardener with many years of organic gardening experience right here in central Oklahoma. Garden planners are a dime a dozen in the marketplace, but I am not aware of any other organic garden planner that is specifically written for the central Oklahoma gardener, by someone with actual productive experience growing organic vegetables. The planner is available through the Oklahoma Food Cooperative, but non-members can order the planner by contacting him directly at:
One or two copies are $15.00 each, plus $2.75 per book for postage. You can contact him about picking them up in person and saving the postage. Cooperative members who order it on the December order will not have to pay postage, it will be delivered with their monthly food order. He also has a new booklet, "Growing and Using the Top Ten Culinary Herbs". It is $5.00 plus postage if sent through the mail.
